Preventing and Reversing Diabetes with Functional Medicine
Diabetes is out of control in the developed countries. According to the Center for Disease Control, in the United States alone, there are over 29 million people with diabetes. Over 8 million DO NOT KNOW THEY HAVE IT!
The CDC also estimates that another 37% of all adults in the U.S. are DEVELOPING diabetes. Together with those already diagnosed, that would mean that over 110 million adults, roughly 1 in 2 adults are either diabetic or pre-diabetic.
Diabetes is the #1 reason for kidney failure, the #1 reason for leg amputations (aside from war or other traumas), and the #1 reason for blindness in adults under age 65.
Everyone knows someone living with the effects of diabetes. Dr. Welch lost her grandfather to complications of Type 1 diabetes before she was born, her niece has Type 1 diabetes, and several in her circles of friends and family are diabetic.
Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes can be controlled through lifestyle and clinical nutrition to prevent devastating complications.
It is important to get tested properly.
We are proud to offer the highest level of nutritional analysis available by providing patients with a Science Based Nutrition™ report of finding and recommendations. Science Based Nutrition™ uses the latest in diagnostic testing, (blood, heavy metal, toxic element, tissue, mineral and urinalysis, etc.), to reveal nutritional deficiencies, illness, or tendencies toward disease even before symptoms have manifested. Using these valuable tests, we are able to make specific dietary, supplementation and lifestyle recommendations and monitor your progress through re-testing.
Here is an example of a patient with Type 2 diabetes that was able to turn around his diabetes with Science Based Nutrition recommendations.
In just 3 months
The 65-year old patient presented with High Blood Pressure and Type II Diabetes. At the time of the initial visit, he weighed 272 lbs at 5’6” and his blood pressure was 130/70. He had peripheral neuropathy in his feet which may have attributed to his feelings of numbness, swelling, muscle cramps and weakness.
Despite taking 2 medications to control his diabetes, this patient's first glucose and A1c readings were twice the healthy limit!
Initial symptoms - high cholesterol, high blood pressure, numbness/swelling, slow healing, advanced neuropathy in legs/feet, muscle cramps, Charcot Neuroarthropathy, and Type 2 diabetes.
His initial functional medicine findings showed several deficiencies and imbalances. His toxic element/minerals test also revealed a high amount of arsenic and nickel in his system, which may have partially caused the imbalances of essential elements. He also was found to have high ferritin - or too much iron in his cells, and an increasing level of uric acid (which leads to gout).
His commitment to his SBN recommendations paid off. He was able to make dramatic improvements in a short time, eventually coming off all 6 of his prescription medications.
